Based at one of North County Dublins finest beaches, Balcarrick beach in Donabate is where Secrets of the Seashore came to life.
As a young girl while adoring Lambay Island from a distance, its founder spent her time exploring the beautiful peninsula of Donabate and Portrane. She filled her Summer days swimming, rock climbing, exploring caves, making sandcastles, shell collecting and rock pooling. Other than realising that it was the best fun a child could ever experience, she had no idea of what a profound affect that spending time as a child in such an amazing playground would have on her adult life.
It stayed in her soul.
Although she spent all that time at the beach as a child, as an adult she realised that she really knew very little about the seashore and its environment. How and why do the tides change? How do waves get so big? Why is the sea so salty? Where do shells come from? What lives in them? Why do Jellyfish get stranded? Where does sand come from? Why does her sandcastle fall apart?
She set about learning everything she could about the Seashore and its environment. While studying marine science she has had quite an exciting journey finding out how human activity impacts our coastal enviornment, what lives beneath the sand, what mermaids purses are and where heart urchins come from along with many other amazing seashore facts.
She now runs Secrets of the Seashore where she teaches children and adults how to explore the seashore in a safe, fun and environmentally friendly way. Creating fun filled memories while helping protect and preserve our beautiful shores and surrounding environments so that years from now we can all still enjoy the wonders of our coastlines.
One of the greatest gifts we can give our planet is a trip to the seashore with a child and show them all it has to offer and in turn that child will learn to respect, love and cherish not only our seashores but all their surroundings. Once they learn that if we don’t take care of our coastal environment now and into the future we will loose the best parts of our planet, then they too will help protect and preserve it for generations to come.
By doing this, we as adults can also learn a great deal and have lots of fun while making amazing memories for ourselves and our children… so go on, get to the beach! Turn off the computer and TV, grab your hat and scarf, a loved one, a child, don’t forget the grandparents and go explore our beautiful seashores.
